The Ultimate Fighter 17 Finale: Jorgensen vs Faber Results

The Ultimate Fighter 17 went down tonight in the Mandalay Bay Events Centre in Las Vegas, Nevada. Some of the TUF 17 cast were able to show they truly belong at this level. Clint Hester was dominant over Bristol Marunde for 3 rounds and ended it with a Weidmanesque elbow TKO. Dylan Andrews made quick work of Jimmy Quinlan earning a first round TKO. Luke Barnatt and Colin Hart engaged in a 3 round war with Barnatt taking the unanimous decision victory. Josh Samman looked impressive on the feet in his 2nd round TKO via knees and strikes over Kevin Casey. Bubba McDaniel was able to lock up a 3rd round submission on Gilbert Smith who he basically bullied for the first 2 rounds.

In the main event of the evening, the other Urijah on the card, Urijah Faber looked almost inhuman through round 1 and 2 of his fight with Scott Jorgensen. Round 3 seemed to go more the way of Jorgensen, but was an extremely close round, mostly fought on the feet. In round 4, Faber was able to secure a takedown and quickly jump to a figure 4 on Jorgensen’s back. He locked up the rear-naked, securing the submission victory. We lose 1 unit.

As we hinted in our preview article, we thought Gastelum might have value since the odds on him were sitting up over 3 to 1. Not that we necessarily saw something about him that made us think he’d win, we just suspected he was coming to fight hard and that Uriah may have been over hyped. Well we didn’t recommend the bet so we can’t classify this as a win, but it was an exciting, back and forth fight and Gastelum took home the split decision win to become The Ultimate Fighter.

Honourable mention to the ladies on the card. Cat Zingano defeated Miesha Tate in an action packed back and forth 3 round war. If you were against women being in the UFC initially, this fight has to help move you in favour of it. Congrats to Zingano and we look forward to seeing her on “The Real World UFC” err… TUF 18.

Our heavyweight pick of the night, Travis Browne took care of business vs Gabriel Gonzaga. Gonzaga was seemingly in control early in the first, pushing Browne up agains the fence. Unfortunately for Gonzaga, Browne unleashed a bunch of ferocious elbows knocking the Brazilian out on his feet. We win 0.8 units on our 2 unit bet.

Our model was right on the money with the prediction that Cole Miller would defeat Bart Palaszewski. While Miller looked to be the less skilled when the fighters were on their feet, once he was able to get Palaszewski down, he quickly locked up a rear naked choke and took home the big W. This win probably secures his UFC job for at least one more fight. We 2.33 units.
