UFC 159 went down last night from the Prudential Centre in Newark, New Jersey. It had heavily hyped co-main and main events in Bisping vs Belcher and Jones vs Sonnen. The theme of the night though, seemed to be brutal injuries as a few of the fighters ended the night needing medical attention. For The Fight Predictor, it was another successful night of betting with a return of 2.11 units.
Jones vs Sonnen
In the main event of the night, The Ultimate Fighter 17 coaches, Jon Jones and Chael Sonnen squared off in a fight that had been heavily hyped over the past few months. The fight was another dominant performance by Jones. While commentators Joe Rogan and Mike Goldberg questioned Jones’s strategy of keeping Chael close and going for the takedowns, it paid off for the light heavyweight champion of the world as he eventually managed to hold Chael down long enough to get the finish with his trademark nasty elbows. This fight marks Jones’s fifth title defense and 9th straight UFC win since losing by disqualification for illegal elbows against Matt Hamill. Chael Sonnen hinted at retirement in his post fight interview, saying he would only fight as long as their exists a path to a championship belt. Jones didn’t leave the octagon completely intact however, as his big toe was brutally broken (nswe – not safe while eating). The first round stoppage gave us a profit of 0.25 units on our 1 unit bet that Jones would get the finish.
Belcher vs Bisping
In a heated contest where several pre-fight bets had been made between the fighters including Bisping getting a Rolls Royce Phantom should he knock Belcher out in the first round, Belcher getting a union jack tattoo with Bisping’s face on his chest and Bisping getting a Johnny Cash tattoo on his arm, Bisping was able to duck and weave his way to a third round decision victory. Belcher powerful offense was rendered ineffective by the quick Brit who seemed to be constantly on the move and a step ahead of his competitor. Bisping didn’t land the huge punches required to knock Belcher out, but he was able to do enough damage to slow his opponent down and take the decision victory following a third round eye poke. The Bisping victory got us a 1.26 unit profit on our 2 unit bet.
Kongo vs Nelson
In one of our 2 lost bets on the night, Nelson was able to dispose of the (much bulked up, TRT enhanced?) Cheick Kongo at just over 2 minutes into the first round via right haymaker. An interesting match-up we tweeted to UFC President Dana White is to have Roy Nelson match-up with a hopefully returning soon Shane Carwin with the winner getting a shot at the winner of Velasquez vs Silva. The loss in this fight cost us our 1.5 unit bet.
Jones over Sonnen. Profit of 0.25 units on our 1 unit bet for Jones to finish Sonnen
Bisping over Belcher. Profit of 1.26 units on our 2 unit bet
Nelson over Kongo. Loss of 1.5 units
