UFC 163 went down tonight from the HSBC Arena in Rio De Janeiro, Brazil. The crowd was hot for this one and for a card with limited big names, there were some pretty exciting showings and some impressive guys to keep an eye on in the future.
In the main event, we had a 1 unit bet on Jose Aldo to defeat Chan Sung Jung via decision. The bet looked good through 3 rounds with both fighters fighting more tentatively than most people had expected. Even though there was limited action, Aldo definitely had the overall advantage in all three rounds. In the fourth round, a strike by Jung separated his shoulder and Aldo was able to quickly capitalize on the opportunity, securing a TKO victory. We lost our 1 unit bet on this fight.
In the co-main event, our model had Lyoto Machida defeating Phil Davis and while we were tempted to bet on a Machida decision victory at 2.05 to 1, we held off. After going three rounds, Phil Davis surprisingly took an undeserved (in our opinion) decision victory with all 3 judges giving him the nod 29-28. In what is becoming typical of a Lyoto Machida fight, there was a complete lack of offense with both fighters fighting tentatively for the majority of the fight, drawing the ire of the Brazilian crowd on multiple occassions.
Honourable mentions have to go out to the other 3 victors on the main card. Cezar Ferreira looked awesome in earning a quick submission victory over Thiago Santos that was set up by some lightning quick strikes (looking a little like his mentor, Vitor Belfort). Thales Leites looked much better in the striking department than he has in the past. He was actually able to get the better of Tom Watson in many of their exchanges and took a unanimous (30-27) decision victory. Finally, John Lineker got caught in the first round with a spinning back fist by Jose Maria (Tome?), but was able to come back and earn a TKO early on in round 2, a rarity in the UFC’s lightest weight class.
In a complete disappointment, Vinny Magalhaes was quickly disposed of by Anthony Perosh. It took Perosh just 14 seconds to find the chin of Magalhaes and finish the fight. Leading up to the fight, Magalhaes had to be one of the most overrated fighters in the UFC. Unfortunately, we bought into the hype and bet on Magalhaes to get the finish. We lost 1 unit on this bet as well.
It wasn’t a great night for the fight predictor, but overall there was limited value on this card and we tried to capitalize on the opportunities we saw available. Unfortunately, that resulted in a 2 unit loss on the night. We will be back for the big debut of the UFC on Fox Sports 1 which happens later this month!
