Bellator 132 and WSOF 17 Betting Tips

Bellator 132: Freire vs Strauss goes down tomorrow (Friday, January 16) from the Pechanga Resort & Casino in Temecula, California. Bellator won’t be the only important MMA card this weekend though as we also have WSOF 17: Shields vs Foster going down Saturday night from Planet Hollywood in Vegas and UFC Fight Night 59: McGregor vs Siver going down Sunday from Boston. We already posted our early betting tips and fantasy preview for the UFC event, so we’re here to bring you a betting tip for the second tier fight cards going down this weekend! Our bet for this weekend will involve one fighter from Bellator and one fighter from WSOF combined in a 2-team parlay. In the main event of Bellator 132, Patricio Freire and Daniel Strauss will collide. Freire opened as a 1.32 (-315) favourite, but has since climbed to 1.57 (-175). We think the public is on the wrong side on this fight and we felt the opener was closer to the fair line on the fight. Freire enters the fight as Bellator’s featherweight champ and riding a 5 fight win streak with 3 of those 5 coming by TKO/KO. His only 2 career losses have come by split decision which is a pretty impressive stat for someone with 24 career fights. His opponent, Strauss, is 23-5 overall and is a former featherweight champ. He actually met Freire previously in 2011 and lost the fight via unanimous decision. Freire will be the first leg of our parlay.

It didn’t take long to find a worthy parlay partner for Freire on the WSOF card. Jake Shields is 30-7-1 with 1 no contest and is a former Strikeforce middleweight champion and UFC welterweight title contender. From 2007 to 2010 across the UFC and Strikeforce/EliteXC, he won 8 straight including wins over Martin Kampmann, Dan Henderson, Robbie Lawler and Paul Daley. When cut from the UFC, Shields was 3-1 (1) with the 1 no contest coming because of a positive drug test following a win over Ed Herman. It was undisputably his boring style and not his MMA skills that got him cut from the UFC, but he was able to succeed in his first fight post UFC defeating Ryan Ford by submission in the first round of their October, 2014 encounter. His opponent, Brian Foster is also a former UFC fighter. Foster went 3-2 for the UFC in 2009 and 2010 before being cut due to various health complications. He actually holds a submission win over Matt Brown in 2010, which is impressive until you consider that Matt Brown could be submitted by basically anybody at that point in his career. Other than Brown and a win over Steve Carl in 2006, there are a serious lack of big names in Foster’s 22 wins. We expect Shields to employ his usual boring style to win a decision, doing just enough on the ground to avoid being stood up. For that reason, we placed a 2 unit parlay bet on Shields and Freire at 1.90 (-110) at 5Dimes.

That’s it for our Bellator 132: Freire vs Strauss and WSOF 17: Shields vs Foster betting tips. We will be back tomorrow or Saturday with our full betting tips for UFC Fight Night 59: McGregor vs Siver.
