UFC 187: Johnson vs Cormier goes down this weekend from Las Vegas, Nevada and it is looking like the second best card of the year, at least on paper, only trumped by UFC 189: Aldo vs McGregor which goes down in July. Unfortunately, Jon Jones isn’t defending his title due to legal issues, but we still have the second and third best UFC light heavyweights competing for the now vacated championship. The fact that Jones was stripped of his title may actually be good for business for the UFC because now they can build up his return and make his fight vs Johnson or Cormier an even bigger event. Besides Johnson and Cormier though, we also have Chris Weidman defending his title against Vitor Belfort. That is a fight we won’t be betting on because Belfort has previously looked unstoppable inside the Octagon, but is now 38 years old, hasn’t fought in almost 2 years and is now off TRT. With that many unknowns, and with Weidman as a pretty big favourite, it just doesn’t make sense to place a bet on the favourite. It may be worth placing a small wager on Belfort, but that won’t be something we’ll be doing. If you’re interested in getting all our betting tips for the event, go to our CapperTek profile and pick the bets package that you like best. The best value is the 30 day package which will get you 5 events worth of bets for just $24.95. In the middle of the main card, one of the busiest fighters in the UFC, Donald Cerrone takes on John Makdessi in the lightweight division. Cerrone was initially supposed to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov, but an injury forced Nurmagomedov out of that fight. We were actually going to give Cerrone out as a paid betting tip in that fight where he was around 3.00 (+200) or so at most sportsbooks. We will still be betting Cerrone except now it’s as a member of a 2 team parlay. Cerrone has a very well rounded mixed martial arts game with solid striking, decent grappling and a very good ground game. He has won 7 straight frights over some of the best guys the UFC lightweight division has to offer in Benson Henderson, Eddie Alvarez and Edson Barboza. Not only is he winning these fights, but he’s been finishing in style with 4 of the 7 wins coming by finish and all 4 winning him post fight bonuses. Makdessi will be entering the fight on 3 weeks notice after winning via TKO over Shane Campbell at UFC 186. Facing Cerrone will be a massive step up for Campbell with his previous best opponent being Daron Cruickshank. We don’t expect Makdessi to pass this test and we expect Cerrone to be able to get a knockout or submission in round 1 or 2. Because of our confidence in Cerrone, he is the first leg of our 2 team free bet parlay.
The second leg of the two team parlay is John Dodson. Dodson will be taking on Zach Makovsky in a flyweight feature fight of the preliminary card. Dodson is 30 years old and 16-6 overall. He is 5-1 inside the Octagon including a TKO win over John Moraga and a TKO over current bantamweight champion TJ Dillashaw back in 2011 to win TUF. One concern for Dodson is the fact that he has been somewhat inactive. He hasn’t fought in 11 months since TKOing Moraga last June so there could be some ring rust when he enters the Octagon. Makovsky is 32 years old and 19-5 overall. He is 3-1 in UFC competition and is coming off a decision win over Tim Elliott in February. The fight against Dodson will be a pretty big step up for him, but it will also have big stakes with the winner potentially being next in line for a title shot. We don’t think Makovsky will be able to handle the power and speed of Dodson and we expect Dodson to pick up a decision win. We parlayed Dodson over Makovsky with Cerrone over Makdessi for 3 units at 1.57 (-175).
