We’re under a week away from Daniel Cormier attempting to defend his UFC light heavyweight title for the first time against top contender Alexander Gustafsson in Houston, Texas. The fights go down as usual on Saturday night and the main card is available on PPV. We’re here to bring you the first of many plays we expect to have on the card. If the odds stay where they are until Saturday, we could potentially have up to 8 total bets for the card so you will definitely be getting your money’s worth if you sign up to get all our bets from Cappertek. In terms of our recent results, we capped off another profitable month in September with an almost 5 unit profit at UFC Fight Night 75: Barnett vs Nelson last weekend. That brings us to 6-3 on the year in terms of profitable months, but all of our winning months have been 5 units or more while 2 of our losing months have been less than 5 units. In total, we’re up just under 50 units in 2015 so far for an ROI of just under 14%. The year is shaping up to be our best yet and we still have several more big events to come. You can check out the full details of our entire betting history in our track record or third party tracked since the start of 2015 at Cappertek.
In the main event, as we mentioned above, Daniel Cormier will attempt to defend his newly won UFC light heavyweight title against Alexander Gustafsson. Cormier is a former gold medalist at the Pan Am games in freestyle wrestling, winning the crown in 2003. He is now 36 years old and has a 16-1 overall record. He has gone 4-1 since crossing over to the UFC from Strikeforce with his only loss being for the title against Jon Jones before Jones’ little car crash. Alexander Gustafsson is 28 years old and 16-3 overall. He is 8-3 in the UFC and reached the pinnacle of the light heavyweight division, giving Jon Jones his toughest fight to date; a unanimous decision victory for Jones in September, 2013. Since the fight against Jones, Gustafsson TKO’d Jimi Manuwa, but then faltered again getting TKO’d by Anthony Johnson back in January. Cormier’s only fight since his title opportunity saw him defeat the aforementioned Johnson by third round submission in May which was for the vacant light heavyweight title. We like Cormier as the favourite in this fight. He should be able to use his usual grinding style to mitigate the reach of Gustafsson and while takedowns won’t come easily, we expect as Gustafsson begins to tire, Cormier may be able to begin to land takedowns. Daniel Cormier is the first leg of our free bet parlay at 1.29 (-350).
The second leg of our two team parlay is Joseph Benavidez. Benavidez fights Ali Bagautinov in a flyweight main event of the Fox Sports 1 prelims. Benavidez is 31 years old and holds a 22-4 overall record. He has been fighting for the UFC since March, 2011 and has gone 9-2 for the promotion with both losses coming to the flyweight champ, Demetrious Johnson. Since being TKO’d by Johnson in their latest fight, he has rattled off 3 straight over a decent level of competition in Tim Elliott, Dustin Ortiz and John Moraga. Bagautinov is also a former title contender, fighting and losing to Johnson in June of last year. He is 30 years old and 13-3 overall. In the UFC he is 3-1, with a big win over John Lineker prior to getting his title shot. In this fight our model favours Benavidez strongly enough to make him a parlay leg as a decent sized favourite. We expect Benavidez to have a speed advantage which tends to be a huge factor in flyweight fights. Bagautinov has also been out for over a year so there is likely to be some ring rust in his return. We parlayed Benavidez over Bagautinov and Cormier over Gustafsson for 3 units at 1.69 (-145) at Bookmaker.
